CM Yogi Adityanath Emphasizes Environmental Conservation Rooted in Sanatan Traditions
On May 22 (PTI) in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday highlighted the requirement for collective responsibility and participation in environmental conservation. He inaugurated the National Seminar-2025 on the theme “Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development” at the Indira Gandhi Pratishthan in Lucknow. He cited the Vedic Shanti Path and said that every auspicious ritual in Sanatan Dharma begins with prayers for the well-being of the earth, water, sky, and all living beings. Yogi said that these traditions underscore humanity’s deep-rooted connection with nature and biodiversity.
“Government efforts alone are not enough… Sustainable development will only be possible when society works harmoniously with nature,” he said. Pondering on India’s self-reliant rural traditions, the CM talked about how villages once had barns, pasture lands, ponds and compost pits, all helping majorly to environmental sustainability. Solid waste was turned into compost, ponds guaranteed hygiene, and pasture lands supported livestock. However, these time-tested practices were overlooked in pursuing modernity, leading to ecological imbalance and the rise of disease. He warned that practices like turning ponds into drainage outlets and expanding on pasturelands are short-sighted and self-destructive.
Heritage and Development Integration
The CM Yogi Adityanath emphasized the need for balancing heritage conservation with development. Citing Ayodhya’s transformation under his government, he said, “The double-engine government has worked under the guidance of saints to restore Ayodhya’s ancient glory. The construction of the grand Ramlala temple and the development of Ayodhya Dham are living examples of this initiative.”
CM Adityanath took part in the Ashtottarshat 108 Shrimad Bhagwat Paath and Panchnarayan Mahayagya, offering oblations with Vedic chants for the state’s prosperity and peace. He pointed out the spiritual and environmental advantages of religious rituals, saying, “Yagya is not just for self-purification but also for environmental sanctity and spreading positive energy in society.”
Emphasizing religious persecution in neighboring countries, he posed critical questions: “What is happening in Bangladesh today? What happened in Pakistan and Afghanistan? Who were the people responsible for destroying the symbols of Sanatan Dharma, and what was their intention? Their aim was to turn the earth into a place of suffering through their misdeeds.”
Urgent Need for Reconnecting with Nature
Noticing the strange behavior of animals, the CM said no wild animals turn violent without reason. “Earlier, elders advised placing flour and sugar for ants; today we spray insecticides to kill them,” he said. He mentioned Jatayu, the first martyr of the Ramayana, as a symbol of nature’s protectors — and regretted that now we need special centers for the conservation of vultures and other species of animals and birds, which are endangered due to excessive use of chemicals, fertilizers, and animal drugs.
“Uncontrolled development models are potentially suicidal,” he warned, stressing that not all processes need to be mechanized. Indigenous water treatment techniques should be adopted to maintain natural balance. This Earth is not just for humans. If we want to survive, we must work toward protecting animals, water sources, and the environment as a whole, he emphasized.
CM Honors Environmental Efforts
The Chief Minister of UP, Yogi Adityanath, visited a themed exhibition related to biodiversity during the seminar, interacting directly with stall owners to learn about their displayed products. He released the Green Budget and a Biodiversity booklet, acknowledging efforts towards environmental conservation. He also praised students who showcased talent and environmental awareness by giving awards to the winners of painting, essay, and debate competitions. Moreover, he offered Rs 10,000 in incentives to individuals well-known for their exceptional support of carbon initiatives and gave certificates of gratitude to NGO-affiliated farmers.
The successful installation of Lord Shri Ramlala’s divine temple in Ayodhya on January 22, 2024, and the efforts made by PM Modi to recognize the Mahakumbh in Prayagraj as an intangible cultural heritage were also commended by him.
